Women who are at a high risk of developing breast cancer may opt to have a preventative mastectomy of one or both breasts. Performing reconstruction surgery at the time of the mastectomy can help to provide a greater sense of wholeness after surgery.
Nipple-Sparing Reconstruction
A nipple-sparing mastectomy requires both a breast surgeon and a reconstructive surgeon. First, the breast surgeon removes the affected tissue, leaving the nipple alone. Immediately following, Dr. Chin performs flap surgery to reconstruct the breast.
Nipple Reconstruction
There are a number of techniques plastic surgeons use for nipple reconstruction. It is usually an outpatient surgery.
Surgery that is performed to correct previous breast reconstructions that have failed or resulted in a suboptimal outcome.
Immediate or Delayed Reconstruction
Immediate is done at the same time as mastectomy surgery. Delayed occurs after mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery, as well as after radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapies that are given.
